Christmasy Bokeh Portraits

One of the best things about Christmas is that there is lights everywhere at Orchard road. This means great opportunities for Bokeh photos!

What are Bokeh photos? To me, they are nice blurry out of focus little points of light that makes my photos pretty.

Like for example in this sample photo, these little points of lights provide a very Christmasy background.

But the troublesome part of making them the background of a portrait is that manual focusing is needed for better control to achieve the desired effect. A fast lens (f1.8), preferably with a DSLR or a camera with larger sensor to get the difference in background and foreground is usually required. A 50mm or 85mm lens gives the best results for portraits, but I have used a 35mm lens which I is what I use most of the time and works too.

Choose relatively small points of lights, such as those tiny Christmas lights. Avoid large light sources or you will get the big blob of ugly white light as below.

Get your subject up close, choose the largest aperture (usually < f3.5), focus on the eyes and shoot. Usually it takes a couple of tries to get the subject in focus. This usually results in grumpy subjects such as my poor model.

Repeat, enjoy.
